The probe committee led by former Inspector General of Police Kuber Singh Rana submitted its report to Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bimalendra Nidhi on Thursday, 75 days after the accident.
Ruling out suggestions of foul play, the report says Ghimire himself was driving the jeep when the incident happened on September 25. Seven people, including Ghimire, were travelling in the jeep. Security personnel recovered bodies of Ghimire’s mother Chaitanya Kumari, his nephew Narayan Kafle, brothers Prakash Ghimire and Mohan Ghimire, Armed Police Force Sub-Inspector Ram Chandra Karki. Police head constable Bishnu Rai was badly injured in the accident. Ghimire’s body is yet to be found. The family was returning to Kathmandu after performing Sorha Shraddha—an annual commemorative ceremony—in honour of deceased ancestors in Kagbeni of Mustang district. A former chief secretary, Ghimire had served as home and foreign minister in the technocratic government led by former chief justice Khil Raj Regmi.
