The meeting of the Legislature-Parliament was disrupted yet again on Friday owing to obstruction from the opposition parties which are protesting the registration of the constitution amendment bill.

The House meeting which was supposed to continue the theoretical discussion on the impeachment motion against suspended chief of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority Lokman Singh Karki has been adjourned by a week. No sooner the House meeting had started than the lawmakers from seven different parties, including the main opposition CPN-UML, stood from their respective seats. The lawmakers from the UML, CPN-ML, Rastriya Janamorcha, Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party, among others, have been obstructing the House since November 30, demanding the withdrawal of the amendment bill.

Nepal Pariwar Dal, which had voted for Pushpa Kamal Dahal in the prime ministerial election, has also joined the protest withdrawing its support to the government.

Despite repeated requests from Speaker Onshari Gharti to support the discussion over impeachment motion, the opposition parties did not budge. She reminded the parties that the constitution amendment bill was not on the House’s agenda. “The obstruction of the House will ultimately affect the constitution implementation process. Therefore, I urge all the parties to resolve issues through Parliament,” she reiterated in the meeting.

The next meeting of Parliament has been called for December 15 as the Speaker is travelling to Dubai on Saturday to participate in a world conference of women lawmakers. This is her second foreign visit in two weeks and third in the last two months. She is travelling abroad while the House remains obstructed, hampering in the finalisation of crucial issues including amendment bill.
