The main opposition will agree on finding common ground on the constitution amendment bill sooner rather than later, a senior CPN (Maoist Centre) leader said on Friday, adding that the government will not take the bill forward without seeking consensus among parties.
“The amendment bill will not be put to vote without taking the CPN-UML on board,” Barshaman Pun told the Post in an interview. “The Madhes-based parties are also calling for revising the amendment bill. So, we will work to find consensus among the parties on the way forward.”
While the UML is dead set against the amendment bill, the Madhes-base parties have refused to take ownership of it, putting the government in a tight spot.
The UML cannot remain indifferent to the urgency of the need for elections, which will mean a step forward towards constitution implementation, said Pun, who played a key role in forming the incumbent government under his party chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
“The government introduced the amendment bill after several rounds of discussions with the UML and the Madhes-based parties,” he said. “They are now against the amendment bill because they have differences on the contents. More discussions will be held to find a meeting point.”
