A contract worker at Lumbini Development Trust (LDT) has been staging an indefinite hunger strike for the past eight days to press for a five-point demand including professional perks and benefits for the workers. Rabindranath Shukla, a representative of daily-wage earners and contract workers, has resorted to the hunger strike on behalf of the workers’ union.
The five-point demands of the workers include dismissal of LDT Member Secretary Ajitman Tamang, immediate payment of the outstanding salary of daily workers and contract workers, promotion of the employees and employment guarantee and permanent status of the workers through due process, and end of corruption and discriminatory behaviour against the LDT employees.
“The LDT has not shown any concern to implement the agreement signed with us in the past,” said Shukla, talking to Post on Sunday, “There is discrimination in the treatment of workers.” He added that the LDT authority showed a repeated tendency to turn a blind eye to addressing the demands.
There are around 100 employees including daily workers and contract workers in the LDT.
The agitating workers, mostly security guards and gardeners, have accused Tamang of wielding his authority in an arbitrary manner. They have demanded the salary of 109 days—last year—during which they staged protest and the unpaid salary of this year’s past three months.
