The plan for building a birth centre at Deusa VDC of Solukhumbu has hit a snag with ungainly disputes between the local political parties.

The budget for building a birth centre at the village was allocated four years ago. When the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction pledged to forward the plan if land is available for construction of the maternity unit, donors had quickly come up with five ropanis of land on February 16, 2012.

The land was transferred cost-free under the ownership of the health post and Rs 30 million also trickled in for construction of the building.

Overshadowing an urgent need for a birth centre in the village, the political parties chipped in from nowhere and got into a dispute following an agreement with the contractor company. The political parties are divided mainly on two fronts – one is of constructing the building on the land owned by the health post and the other of using the public land where the health post is currently located.

The Department has said that the construction cannot be undertaken without registering the public land in the name of the health post.

Meanwhile, Sagarmatha Asal Sasan Club, Deusa on Saturday held a public assembly and launched a signature campaign to press for construction of the birth place at the health post's land, Club Chairman, Milan Kumar Rai said.

In an outrageous condition faced by the people of the 21st century world, the expectant mothers here in Deusa are forced to undertake a journey through rugged terrain for five hours to deliver a child due to lack of a birth centre in the village. RSS
