They are protesting against the discriminatory provisions of the proposed Local Body Service Bill that “will lead to displacement of thousands of employees serving in local bodies by civil servants”.
On Tuesday, the agitating employees demonstrated in Janakpur, Morang, Darchula, Salyan, Nuwakot and Dhading, among other districts. Arbind Mandal of Morang said people have been facing problems as they could not receive recommendations necessary for obtaining citizenship, passport and official documents.
In Morang, the employees did not allow the local development officer and VDC secretaries to enter their offices. In Janakpur, the employees organised a protest rally to mount pressure on the government to address their demands. Sadhusaran Yadav, a protester, said they would continue their protests until the government addresses their demands.
In Salyan, police broke the padlocks attached by the agitating staffers to the District Development Committee office. The employees continued with their sit-in even after the police intervened. In Dhading and Nuwakot districts, earthquake survivors complained that they were unable to get documents necessary for rebuilding their houses.
