Student union leaders associated with three major political parties and Netra Bikram Chand's CPN Maoist party have agreed in principle to postpone the Free Student Union (FSU) elections by five days.

A meeting of the student leaders in Kathmandu on Thrusday took the decision to this effect even as the leaders of their mother party decided to conduct the election on the slated date of February 25.

Student leaders said the decision to put off the election was made due to the padlocking in various TU-affiliate colleges and the pessimistic statements by campus chiefs on the possibility of holding elections under current circumstances.

All Nepal National Independent Students Union- Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) Spokesperson Surendra Basnet informed the decision to postpone the FSU elections was taken considering the padlocking in various campuses and upon the request of student union aligned to CPN Maoist. Basnet said March 4 could be confirmed as the new date for the elections.

Basnet said they will inform the Tribhuvan University about the decision to postpone the elections. TU has summoned leaders of various student organisations on Thursday afternoon.

The agreement to postpone election will now end the padlocking in various campuses, Basnet said.

The agreement among leaders has also affected the election schedule.
