Earlier on Wednesday, the RPP had made a unanimous decision to appoint incumbent Chairman Kamal Thapa as the next chairman of the party.
The first convention of after the merger of RPP-N and the RPP on November 22 is kicking off in the Capital on Friday. Lohani announced his candidature saying that attempts were made to capture the party in an authoritarian manner.
Lohani has reservations over the party’s election symbol and power structure. He said he decided to announce his candidacy for the chairman’s post after it seemed that the party would not move in the right direction based on the agreement reached during a meeting at his residence on Wednesday. He opined that at least two candidates should be elected to the post of party general secretary.
“Earlier we had reached an agreement that the party’s election symbol would be plough. But today there are attempts to disregard the agreement on election symbol and power structure. I have serious reservations about it,” said Lohani at Reporter’s Club in Kathmandu, hours after the announcement of the party’s convention. “Hundreds of thousands RPP cadres are against forming such an authoritarian party.”
