Leaders of the ruling CPN (Maoist Centre) have said the government should take forward both the date of the local polls and the constitutional amendment bill simultaneously.
Prime Minister and party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Thursday briefed Maoist leaders on the latest developments after his discussions with top leaders of the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML on Tuesday and Wednesday.
At the meeting of the party headquarters, PM Dahal said the government would move the amendment proposal as soon as the House reopens on February 21 and finalise the report of the Local Level Restructuring Commission after receiving the recommendations of the taskforce on Thursday.
Maoist leaders said the main opposition UML would be ready to discuss the proposal in Parliament once the government announces the date of the local polls.
“Leaders said the agitating Madhesi Morcha should be taken on board even by increasing the number of local units in Province 2 according to the density of population,” said party Spokesperson Pampha Bhusal.
The next meeting of the party headquarters scheduled for Saturday would finalise the date of the local polls.
PM Dahal also briefed the meeting that the Cabinet decision on the new inspector general of Nepal Police was an outcome of political pressure. A technical official has been appointed the officiating IG as two senior candidates got into a dispute over succession.
