Speaker Onasari Gharti has said that the constitution amendment bill tabled in Parliament will move forward soon after the government announces the date for local elections.
Gharti, who was in the Indian capital to attend a seminar held in Indore of Madhya Pradesh, on Sunday said the charter amendments were aimed at addressing the demands of the Madhesi people and the Madhes-based parties. The Speaker delivered a speech on Sustainable Development Goals and Nepal’s priorities.
“We will expedite efforts to endorse the bill immediately after the government announces the poll date,” said Gharti, adding that setting the date would make room for the Election Commission to carry out its preparations.
Speaking to the Post, the Speaker said there was the need for holding the elections to ensure phase-wise implementation of the new constitution.
As the government prepares to announce the poll dates, the Speaker cut short her stay in New Delhi to return on Sunday evening as requested by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and top leaders of the major parties.
She stressed a broad consensus among the major parties for passing the amendment bill.
“If there is no agreement among the parties, the House will move ahead in accordance with the established norms and practices,” she added.
The Speaker said Parliament has cleared all the bills related to holding the local polls except the bill on political parties. “The House meeting on Tuesday will expedite the process of endorsing the bill,” she added.
