Pick-up plunges into Trishuli; one dead, another missing

An elderly woman died and her grandson went missing when a Bolero pick-up truck swerved off the road and plunged into Trishuli River in Kabilas VDC-4 along the Narayangadh-Muglin road section in Chitwan district on early Monday morning.
Four others, including the vehicle driver, were injured in the incident. According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Dipak Thapa, of Chitwan District Police Office,
the vehicle with the registration number, Ba 3 Cha 7543, had fallen into the river some 200 metres down the road at around 3am.
The pick-up was en route to Gorkha district from Khairahani of Chitwan. There were six persons on board when the incident took place.
Police identified the deceased as 65-year-old Bishnu Maya Gurung from Tarku VDC-3 of Gorkha district.
Bishnu Maya’s 13-year-old grandson Kabin Gurung is missing in the incident,
SP Thapa said.
He added that search was underway to find the missing boy. However, there was no sign of him until late evening.
Bishnu Maya’s son, daughter-in-law, another grandson and vehicle driver, who sustained injuries in the incident, were rescued and taken to Chitwan Medical College for treatment.
Two among the injured are said to be in critical condition.Security personnel had reached the incident site and rescued the victims. They recovered Bishnu Maya’s body some two kilometres downstream from the incident site.
The vehicle has been submerged in the river. Police quoted driver Shivaram Khadka as saying that the vehicle fell into the river as he lost control.
The site is an accident prone area. Twenty-two vehicles have plunged into Trishuli River along this stretch of the road in the past six months, killing at least 36 people. Nineteen people had gone missing after the accidents.
