Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has called on the leaders of the agitating Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) for a “political agreement” as per which the possible issues from among the amendment proposals registered on constitution amendment would be addressed now and the Morcha will participate in the local level elections set for May 14.
PM Dahal’s fresh proposal on Monday comes a day after 15 amendment proposals were registered by lawmakers on constitution amendment on which deliberations started last week in Parliament following the main opposition CPN-UML’s decision to stay out of the process.
According to Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum-Nepal (SSF-N) Co-chair Rajendra Shrestha, PM Dahal requested the Morcha leaders to participate in local level elections, saying “whatever issues
possible from among the amendment proposals registered in Parliament will be endorsed now” and that the rest would be endorsed after the government could ensure two-thirds majority.
The government will need two-thirds majority to get the constitution amendment bill endorsed, but it lacks the numbers at present scenario.
PM Dahal had invited major leaders of the SLMM to Balutawar for an informal meeting on Monday evening in a bid to convince them to participate in local level elections, which are being held after two decades.
However, Sadbhawana Party Chairman Rajendra Mahato said that the Morcha leaders outright rejected PM Dahal’s proposal, as there was “no way the Morcha could trust the government”. “I told him we cannot trust the government,” said Mahato.
Monday’s meeting, however, ended with a decision that more meetings will be held with the leaders of the Nepali Congress and Maoist Centre on Tuesday morning.
