Scams and budget solutions
I am in the market for a budget smartphone and am considering the Colours P85+. But as much as I like the phone,I am in the market for a budget smartphone and am considering the Colours P85+. But as much as I like the phone, I am concerned about the after sales support and build-quality. Do you think the P85+ meets these requirements of mine?
— Ashish Mishra
Dear Ashish,
The Colours P85+ is a pretty decent device and it takes exceptional photos. I’ve personally used the phone and I was blown away by how in-depth their photography
features are. But apart from photography, the phone also has an aluminium build that is bound to last. The aluminium feels and looks strong and sturdy, so I’m pretty sure the phone will last. After sales support might be a problem with a Colours phone, however. Colours is still a pretty small company and they might not be able to provide good support after you’ve bought the phone. Many well-established companies also don’t offer good after-sales services so I wouldn’t expect that from Colours. But the phone is pretty good—it’s solid, fast and the photos are really good for a budget smartphone. It definitely won’t compare to iPhone photos but they’re pretty good nonetheless.
I own a Lenovo A1000 Android smartphone and the problem I’m facing with the device is that the battery drains really fast. It hasn’t even been long that I’ve bought the phone and I’m experiencing battery drain issues on it already. The battery drains from a full 100 percent to zero in two hours, how can I fix this issue?
— Ashutosh Khanal
Dear Ashutosh,
I looked into your phone and it appears that the smartphone itself is flawed. There are a lot of complaints about various problems with the phone and not just the battery draining problem. It also appears that the battery draining issue can’t be fixed because apparently a Lenovo service centre, itself, has claimed that the battery drain issue can’t be fixed. You could try boosting your battery life by using battery saver apps like DU Battery Saver and Avast Battery Saver but even with the use of these apps, you might be able to squeeze only a few more hours of active battery life. But part of the problem also stems from the fact that the smartphone comes with Android Lollipop 5.0, an OS that is notorious for its battery issues. Lenovo hasn’t updated the phone to any new Android versions, thus you can try rooting your device and installing a third-party custom ROM on it. You can find a detailed tutorial on xda-developers. But as far as I can tell, this issue can’t be fixed—shoddy production value with a flawed operating system is a really bad combination. The phone doesn’t even have a dedicated developer’s base so you might even have a difficult time finding a custom ROM for it. It looks like you might have to live with the battery problem.
I am facing a problem with my laptop where on boot, the screen flashes white while the laptop beeps. What is the problem and how do I fix it?
— Zubeen Salman
Dear Zubeen,
If you’re getting a white screen, it means that your display is not the problem. The display is turning on and it is trying to display images on the panel but because the laptop is not providing it with an input, it shows a white screen. If you’re on a Dell laptop, during boot try holding down the D button. If you’re on any other computer, Google BIOS Display Diagnostics for your laptop and you should find a helpful tutorial. Perform the display diagnostic and you should see you screen display various different colours. This means that the display is good and the problem lies elsewhere. A laptop beeping on boot usually means that it’s providing you with a POST code. A POST code is a series of beeps that help you identify what’s wrong with your computer but since these POST codes are different on different BIOS, you might need to identify your BIOS and check what the number of beeps on your BIOS means. I’m assuming that you’re getting a POST code that is referring to a malfunctioning display card. If that’s the issue, repairing your computer might be expensive because a broken display card usually means a complete motherboard replacement. But find out what the problem is before you take it in for repair so that you don’t get scammed.
