Road stretches that have been dug up for laying pipelines from drinking water from Melamchi will be blacktopped by May, an official said on Tuesday.
Various road sections of the Capital are littered with potholes and remain unattended due to ongoing pipe-laying work being carried out for Melamchi Water Supply Project (MWSP), making Kathmandu air dustier than ever and increasing health hazards to general public.
“Usually, we blacktop road sections that are dug for laying pipelines,” said Lila Prasad Dhakal of the Project Implementation Directorate of the (PID) of Kathmandu Upatayaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL). “We have already started blacktopping roads at various places in coordination with the Department of Roads.”
According to Dhakal, the KUKL has already blacktopped the road near the Tribhuvan International Airport and Tinkune-Maitighar, Balaju-Machhapokhari, Narayan Gopal Chowk-Chabahil, Lainchaur-Panipokhari and Gaushala- Jaybageshwori road sections.
Of the total of 670 kilometres of pipeline to be laid in Kathmandu Valley, the PID claims to have completed laying 540 kilometres of pipes.
The places where the pipes have been laid undergo sub-base formation before roads are blacktopped.
“We are working to get roads back in proper condition on time, but delay is caused due to some technical issues,” said Tiresh Prasad Khatri, director of the PID.
The MWSP intensified pipe-laying works in the Valley since January.
After growing complaints from the general public about unrepaired roads and excessive dust in environment, the 47th meeting of the Central Monitoring and Evaluation Committee of the government in January end had directed all concerned to take immediate measures to control pollution and repair roads.
