Jaitely, who arrived in Kathmandu on Thursday to participate in the Nepal Investment Summit, held talks with President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and his counterpart Krishna Bahadur Mahara.
Jaitley told the PM that foreign direct investment is the key drive for development in countries like Nepal. Dahal thanked Jaitely for India’s support to constructing of postal roads, extension of cross-border transmission lines and bridges and recent approval for IRs57 billion investment in the Arun III hydropower project.
The PM invited India to invest in Nepal’s hydropower, tourism and agriculture sectors, according to a statement issued by the PM’s Office.
Informing Jaitley about his government’s efforts to implement the constitution, Dahal said Nepal would enter an era of development and prosperity with political stability.
At the summit, Jaitley pointed out energy, agriculture, tourism and irrigation as sectors of investment in Nepal. He stressed the need for policy reforms for investment, suggesting that the country should adopt a durable tax policy for expanding investments.
