Morcha tried to encircle us: UML

Following the death of three protesters in Rajbiraj, the party decided to postpone its ongoing Mechi-Mahakali campaign by three days.
The programme would continue from Hetauda on Friday, skipping the scheduled events in the rest of Province 2.
Three persons were killed when police opened fire to stop cadres of the agitating Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha from disrupting a mass meeting organised by the UML as part of its Mechi-Mahakali campaign at Maleth in Saptari district on Monday.
Organising a press meet at the party headquarters in Dhumbarahi on Tuesday, General Secretary Ishwor Pokhrel said several UML cadres were injured and more than 50 vehicles, including half a dozen motorcycles, torched.
He claimed that the Rajbiraj incident was premeditated as the Morcha cadres had staged demonstrations and smeared black on the face of a UML leader ahead of the party’s Mechi-Mahakali campaign that kicked off in Kakadbhitta of Jhapa on Saturday.
Pokhrel held the Madhes-based parties responsible for the incident. He claimed that the incident was a plot not to let the people decide their own fate by blocking implementation of the new constitution. Though the party had requested the government and the local administration to tighten security around the programme venue, he alleged that the incident occurred due to security lapses.
The opposition party also objected to the Home Ministry’s decision to recall the Chief District Officer and chiefs of Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force from Saptari.
The party has demanded the government and the National Human Rights Commission probe the Rajbiraj incident and let the people know the truth.
