The constitutional body is collecting details of potential polling centres from the district election offices. About 21,000 polling stations are expected to be set up for the local elections.
“We have received details of the potential polling stations from around 47 districts,” said EC Spokesperson Surya Sharma. “Our target is to fix the polling stations by Thursday once details arrive from all the districts.”
The government has formed 744 local units across the country including four metropolises, 13 sub-metropolises, 246 municipalities and 481 village councils. The EC will then mobilise chief election officers in the 75 districts and 669 election officers, who will handle the 744 election offices at the local level.
The commission plans to mobilise a total of 105,000 government staffers and 63,000 volunteers in the polling stations. The EC has asked the Judicial Council and the Ministry of General Administration to send the details of their staffers.
“We have got details of over 300 judges who could be mobilised for elections through the Ministry of Law and Justice,” said Sharma. “We have received details from the ministry about the government staffers.”
The EC plans to set up the election offices on April 16.
