Nepal Press Union ( NPU) has expressed concern over the the Online Media Operation Directive-2016, published by the government in the Nepal gazette recently.

In a press note today, the NPU, an alliance of democratic journalists, said that its serious attention was drawn to the Directive issued under the Good Governance ( Management and Operation ) Act which had no relations with the press law is, it argued, against the worldwide concept of freedom of expression and press freedom guaranteed by the constitution.

The provisions of causing obstructions in the operation of media house without judicial trial and allowing the administrative body to interfere in the editorial and information dissemination process are intended to control over the online media and eventually its development and promotion, the statement issued by NPU General Secretary Ajay Babu Siwakoti said, seeking its scrap and the introduction of a new directive incorporating suggestions from all bodies concerned and organisations .
