At least nine wild animals were killed after being hit by vehicles in the Barandabhar forest area along the East West Highway in one and a half months, according to the District Forest Office (DFO). However, none of the vehicles that hit the wild animals have been identified yet.
All of the animals killed were deer, said Assistant Forest Officer Krishna Paudel. “The main corridor of the wild animal has become an unsafe place due to frequent hit-and-run incidents,” said Paudel, adding that the number of wildlife deaths in road accidents has increased in the region.
Though the Chitwan National Park (CNP) have installed 10 close-circuit cameras in the Barandabhar section to monitor the vehicles, many of them are not working effectively.
Over the past 11 months, 24 deer and a wild boar were killed after being hit by vehicles in the road section. Chandra Shekhar Chaudhary, assistant conservation officer at the CNP, suggested construction of an overhead crossing to protect wild animals from accidents. Meanwhile, DFO officials have started discussions with stakeholders to construct the overhead bridge.
