Area Police Office Inspector Yam Bahadur Poudel said Birendra Khatri of Belwari, Morang, managed to escape police custody from the court premises in Inaruwa. He was taken to the court for extension of his judicial remand.
Inspector Poudel informed that accused Khatri was arrested red-handed with controlled drugs on March 22.
According to police, Khatri escaped from the court’s statement chamber while two constables—Lok Bahadur Mahat and Jeevan Shrestha—were busy using their mobile phones as the government lawyer had not yet arrived.
Meanwhile, Sunsari District Police Office has suspended the constables Mahat and Shrestha citing that the detainee escaped due to their irresponsibility, informed police spokesperson DSP Prabin Dhital. The police have taken the suspended constables under custody and started investigation, Dhital added.
A team coordinated by Inspector Sheshak Ram Thanadar comprising an assistant inspector and a head constable has been formed to conduct a departmental inquiry into the matter. The constables are detained at Area Police Office.
Meanwhile, police are looking for the absconding Khatri.
