The weeklong celebration, slated to start on April 25, will see jazz musicians from Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, and Nepal offering free workshops and masterclasses, alongside concerts, film screenings and live painting.
International Jazz Day is celebrated every year, since 2011, after UNESCO proclaimed April 30 as the day to celebrate “the virtues of jazz as an educational tool, and a force for peace, unity, dialogue and enhanced cooperation among people.”
This year’s celebration in Kathmandu aims to educate the artists and audience alike about the roots of jazz and its evolution. For the first time in Nepal’s history, the event will be marked with a weeklong celebration where local and international artists will collaborate to turn Kathmandu and Patan into a melting pot.
On the occasion, the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory, a popular hub for jazz musicians and enthusiasts in Nepal, will launch a fundraising campaign, Music for Nepal, aiming to provide scholarships for underprevileged students and to continue providing lessons in orphanages around the Valley.
The celebrations will conclude on the International Jazz Day with the main event taking place at Nagbahal, Patan.
