Gathabandhan agree to join local polls after deal to endorse amendment bill

Leaders said the first phase of local level polls would be held on May 14 in Provinces 3, 4 and 6 while the second phase of polls in the remaining provinces (1, 2, 5 and 7) would be held on June 14.
The hectic meeting held at Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal's official residence in Baluwatar for over five hours reached a gentleman's agreement paving way for bringing the Gathabandhan on board the local polls.
Minister for Physical Planning and Transportation Ramesh Lekhak said the local-level polls would be held in two phases first on May 14 and the second date would be finalised after consulting with the Election Commission.
Co-chairman of Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum Nepal Rajendra Shrestha claimed that the Gathabandhan would withdraw the struggle plan only after Sunday’s Cabinet decision.
According to Prime Minister Dahal's secretariat, the meeting also decided to increase the number of election constituencies and local levels in Tarai on the basis of population, while the issue of boundaries would be finalised by a powerful federal commission. It has been learnt that the provision of citizenship would be amended as per the provision of the amendment proposal registered in the parliament and the government would endorse the amendment proposal from the parliament with revision through fast track.
All the deals reached with Gathabandhan would be endorsed by Sunday's Cabinet meeting and the revised amendment proposal would be endorsed through fast track.
RJP leader Laxman Lal Karna said the Gathabandhan would withdraw all their agitation programmes announced earlier as soon as the government endorses the revised amendment proposal.
Another RJP leader Anil Jha said they have made a verbal agreement today and would respond after the Sunday's Cabinet decision.
Talking with reporters after the meeting, NC Leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula said the government would call RJP Chairman Mahantha Thakur and SSF-N Chairman Upendra Yadav, who have gone out of Valley, on Sunday to finalise the deal.
