Out of 63 earthquake-affected families living in Gaikhura (Manthali Municipality-8), Ramechhap, only one family has constructed a new house within two years of the devastating quake.
Even that house has been built with the financial assistance from Leprosy Mission, a social organisation.
The majority of people in the settlement are from the Majhi community. All of the families living in the settlement had received first tranche of the housing reconstruction aid.
Twenty five Majhi families in the settlement are without land ownership papers. Victim Balkrishna Majhi said he will only start rebuilding house after receiving the document.
Majhi people are still living under the temporary huts. Victim Sukamaya Majhi said the first tranche of Rs50,000 was inadequate for her family to start the construction of a house.
“My seven-member family has been living in one room shelter built by CG group,” she said.
Devilal Puri, headmaster of the local basic school, said that the local bodies have not paid attention to the problems of Majhi people.
Around 43,000 houses were destroyed in the district by the devastating earthquake of April 25, 2015 and its strong aftershocks.
Amar Bahadur Thapa, chief of the Urban Development and Building Construction Division, said only 4,000 families have started rebuilding their houses after receiving the first instalment of the government aid.
Thirty-nine thousand quake-affected families had received the first tranche of the aid in the district.
