The government has started a process to increase local units in 11 districts of Tarai.

The process to increase the local units has been started to address the demands of the regional parties.

The Sanghiya Gathabandhan—an alliance of regional parties—has been demanding that the local units should be increased on the basis of population.

The Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development wrote letters to the coordination committees of 11 districts asking them to recommend if they wanted the government to increase local units on the basis of population.

The government has formed a committee under the headship of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Federal Affairs and Local Development Kamal Thapa to do homework and submit a report regarding the increment of local units.

Nepali Congress leader and Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation Shankar Bhandari and CPN (Maoist Centre) leader and Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ajay Shankar Nayak are in the committee.

The Committee has decided to review the number of local units in Saptari, Siraha, Dhanusha, Sarlahi, Mohattari, Bara and Parsa of Province No 2 and Nawalparasi, Rupandehi and Kapilvastu of Province No 5.
