The CPN-UML has put forth a proposal to hold the local level elections in a single phase even by postponing the date. The CPN-UML has put forth a proposal to hold the local level elections in a single phase even by postponing the date.
UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli forwarded the proposal during a meeting with Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and leaders Ram Chandra Paudel and Krishna Prasad Sitaula on Saturday.
The NC leaders, who had reached Oli’s residence in Balkot, Bhaktapur, after holding internal discussions at the party office in Sanepa, said that holding the elections in a single phase was impossible as the calendar for the two-phase elections has already been published.
Leader Paudel said that Oli had proposed to hold the elections on May 25 and 26 before the budget.
“We have told Oli that it was impossible to hold the elections in a single phase,” Paudel added.
The NC leaders had asked the UML Chair to help in endorsing the revised constitution amendment bill and not to obstruct the House proceedings if his party does not support it.
Leader Oli, however, said that his party would not let the House to endorse the amendment bill and hinted to obstruct the House business.
He also expressed his dissatisfaction over the government’s preparation to increase local units only in the 11 districts of Madhes.
“The government has no rights to amend the constitution,” former Prime Minister Oli said, adding, “But the government itself tabled the amendment proposal.”
Following the meeting with leader Oli, the NC leaders left for Baluwatar to hold talks with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
As the UML has shown reluctance to budge from its stance on the amendment bill, the government is in dilemma whether to put the amendment bill on vote or not during the Parliament meeting on Sunday.
According to a NC leader, the UML’s House obstruction could prolong for some more days.
