Two women candidates have been elected the chairperson and the vice-chairperson of Hupsekot Village Council in Nawalparasi.
Nepali Congress candidate Laxmi Pandey secured the chairperson’s position with 4,592 votes. She beat CPN-UML’s Megh Bahadur Pulami, who bagged 4,358 votes.
Pandey, 47, had filed her candidacy from the NC after quitting her teaching job of 13 years.
“I will soon unveil a long-term development plan for Hupsekot. My goal is to stand up to the expectations of the people by bringing development and prosperity to this village,” Pandey said after her election.
Among her wish-list, she said, includes improving health care, school system and agriculture sector of Hupsekot.
Meanwhile, the seat for the village council’s vice-chairperson has gone to Kopila Malla of CPN-UML, who garnered 4,468 votes. She narrowly defeated NC’s Om Bahadur Thapa who secured 4,413 votes.
Hupsekot became the first village council to elect women candidates for the posts of chairperson and vice-chairperson.
In Lamjung, NC woman candidate Chupimaya Gurung was elected the chairperson of Dudhpokhari Village Council. Gurung received 2,413 votes against 1,756 votes of her closest rival Satimaya Tamang from the CPN (Maoist Centre).
In Rasuwa, Sita Kumari Paudel of UML has won the election for the post of chairperson of Kalika Village Council.
She received 1,458 votes while her closest rival Sadhuram Paudel of NC got 1,225 votes.
In Chitwan, Gita Gurung of the NC garnered 3,257 votes to become the chairperson of Ichchhakamana Village Council. She defeated Narayan Prasad Adhikari who received 3,061 votes.
In Myagdi, Thamsara Pun of the UML was elected the chairperson of Dhualagiri Village Council with 2,460 votes.
