Govt decision made 2nd phase polls uncertain: CPN-UML

At a press conference organised in Kathmandu on Tuesday, the main opposition CPN-UML said the Cabinet decision would push the second phase of local level polls slated for June 14 into uncertainty. The party said the government move to add local units after the first phase of local polls and ahead of the second phase elections is an example of “gerrymandering”.
“The redrawing of local unit borders has directly violated the constitutional provision and the recently endorsed law regarding restructuring of local units,” read a statement issued by the party.
Objects delay in withdrawing impeachment motion
The CPN-UML has drawn the attention of the concerned sides to immediately and unconditionally withdraw a motion to impeach Chief Justice Sushila Karki.
The party said the impeachment motion against Karki was prejudiced and motivated by the intention to damage the reputation of a free judiciary. “The reluctance to withdraw the impeachment motion until today is part of a conspiracy to drag the controversy surrounding the conscientious Chief Justice until her retirement,” read the statement.
The opposition party accused that though the first phase of local polls were mostly held in a peaceful and enthusiastic environment, there have been incidents of irregularities, misuse of resources and violence by the cadres of ruling parties in certain places. The party has demanded the government form a parliamentary probe committee to conduct independent investigation of the incidents and so as to not repeat the incidents in the second phase of local polls.
Likewise, the UML has condemned the recent Cabinet decision to withdraw the criminal cases lodged in connection with Tikapur, Kailali incidents and other subsequent protests.
