EC urges govt to create environment for holding election in 461 units
The Election Commission (EC) has urged the government to create an environment for holding the second phase of local level elections only in 461 local units on June 14.The Election Commission (EC) has urged the government to create an environment for holding the second phase of local level elections only in 461 local units on June 14.
In a statement on Thursday, the EC said it would not be technically possible for the commission to hold the elections in the newly added local units as it had been making preparations to hold elections in 461 units.
A Cabinet meeting on Monday had decided to add 22 local units in Tarai districts and elevate Birgunj and Biratnagar as metropolis in a bid to bring the agitating Madhes-centric parties on board the election.
The commission said the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development has not provided the details of the revised structure of village councils and the municipalities for election preparations.
“It is technically difficult for the EC to prepare the voter lists and details of ward-wise voting centres of the revised village councils and municipalities and take the prepared lists to all the local units by May 29,” read a statement issued by the EC.
The EC has informed that it would not be possible to make arrangement for delivering the voter ID cards of the people whose address has changed within the deadline.
