The counting of votes in the Metropolitan City was halted after the ruling CPN (Maoist Centre) representatives tore ballot papers on Sunday night.
Organising a press conference here on Monday, the UML Chitwan District Committee demanded immediate resumption of vote counting. The Committee has also demanded stern against those involved in tearing the ballot papers.
The UML has accused the Maoist Centre of trying to foil the vote counting process at a time when its mayoral candidate Devi Gyawali was on the verge of victory.
Issuing a statement, party District Committee Chairman Krishna Bhakta Pokharel accused the Maoist Centre cadres Dron Siwakoti, Madhu Neupane and Dilip Poudel of forcefully entering the vote counting station, taking the ballot papers from the ground and tearing them.
Police caught the Maoist Centre cadres red-handed along with the torn ballot papers.
Likewise, the party has also stated that frivolous attitude of the election officers and security personnel, despite their repeated plea to make necessary arrangements to combat such incidents, led to the latest unfolding event.
UML’s Devi Gyawali and Maoist Centre’s Renu Dahal, daughter of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, are vying for the post of mayor in Bharatpur Metropolitan City.
