Newly elected mayor, deputy mayor, ward chairperson and other members of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) on Wednesday assumed their offices after taking oath amid a special function.
Dipendra Adhikari, Chief Election Officer of Kathmandu district, administered the oath of office and secrecy to the elected representatives at City Hall in Kathmandu where the poll's vote counting was conducted for nearly two weeks. The programme was attended by officials of the Election Commission, KMC officials and ward representatives.
The newly elected mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya and deputy mayor Hari Prabha Khadki took the oath in Newari language along with other elected members.
Addressing the oath taking ceremony, Adhikari thanked everyone for making the election a success. “ I have been just a facilitator, but it was all the political parties, who took part without breaching the election code of conduct,” said Adhikari.
Meanwhile, newly elected head of KMC, Shakya said he will work in coordination with all the political parties in the coming five years.
Saying that it was a proud moment for her, Deputy Mayor Khadki said, during her tenure, she will give her best to work for the protection of women and their rights.
“Now we have the weight of all the 32 wards on our shoulders and we are committed to make Kathmandu a city of religion, culture and economic transformation,” said Khadki.
Addressing the oath taking ceremony, Ishwor Raj Poudel, the incumbent Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at KMC, said now his work is to manage 1,800 staffers of the KMC. “The newly elected chief will be leading all the team and fulfil the dream of every citizen of Kathmandu,” said Poudel.
