Kathmandu was ranked among the top 10 cities of the world where liveability had improved in the last five years, according to the Global Liveability Ranking Report 2016 published by the Economist Intelligence Unit last August.
The survey rates cities on five broad categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment education and infrastructure.
Despite securing the sixth place among the cities which improved the most in terms of livability, Kathmandu was placed lowly 124th out of 140 cities in the overall rankings.
People of Kathmandu, ever struggling with pollution and garbage problems, are now counting heavily on the newly elected Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Bidhya Sundar Shakya.
Soon after assuming office, Shakya put forth his 101 work plans for the first 100 days of his tenure.
During his election campaign, Shakya had promised voters of making Kathmandu a beautiful city.
In a recent interview with the Post, Shakya said, “I’ll make Kathmandu a better place to live.”
‘Clean City’ campaign, an initiative to tackle with garbage problems of the city, features on top of his agenda.
Bhushan Tuladhar, an environmentalist, praised the campaign calling it a “welcome step”. Only cleaning the streets would not be enough, though, he said.
“This is a good start. We should not criticise this right away. However, only cleaning the streets will not be enough. It was always done by sweepers,” commented Tuladhar.
“Collection and disposal of waste is important. We have to see how the collected garbage will be managed.”
Nearly 500 tonnes of garbage is produced in Kathmandu Metropolitan City, the largest metropolis of the country.
According to Tuladhar, the metropolis needs an integrated plan and team of experts to deal with environmental problems of Kathmandu.
“If we have a credible plan, timely implementation and resources to back it up, then the result will be seen,” suggested Tuladhar Tuladhar praised mayor’s agenda of promoting Kathmandu as a “Cycle City”, saying that the move would go a long way in reducing carbon emission and improve city’s air quality
