Monsoon on canvas

Monsoon is a profoundly evocative word. For some, it brings memories of relentless rain, or the muddy roads one has to walk on; for others, it reminds them of mountains suffused with greenery, or farmers busying themselves with plantation.
How would monsoon when adapted on canvas look like? A host of artists from the Srijanshil Group of Artists, in Pokhara, offered a glimpse. Their latest exhibition which was on at the PSM Art Gallery, featured a total of 66 works by 33 artists,
boasting paintings that captured the artists’ interpretation of the monsoon season.
The watercolour and acryllic paintings had as their subjects virtually everything that one would imagine upon hearing the word monsoon-green hills, farmers ploughing the fields, kids on hunt for Yarsagumba, among others.
The exhibit featured works by artists such as Durga Baral ‘Batsyayan’, Kshetra Lal Kayastha, Buddhi Gurung, Ramesh Shrestha, and Milan Sherchan.
Speaking to the Post, an observer Shraddha Malla said that, looking at the paintings on display, she felt like she was transported to fields of harvest herself. “Since I was born and raised in an urban area, I never got a chance to go to the actual fields
where farmers plant paddy. Now the paintings took me there, albeit virtually,” Malla said.
The exhibit concluded on Tuesday.
