Biratnagar-based Aarohan Gurukul theatre house is currently staging the play Lakhan Patbaari. Directed by Pravin Khatiwada, the play is a satire on the current political and societal ills.
The play opens up at the mythical Yamalok, where the king, Yamaraj, is overcome by a strange whim—to see living humans rather than the dead, who he’s fed up seeing. In order to cater to that wish, messengers travel to the land of the mortals and pick one Lakhan Patbaari, an infamous politician all set to contest in the local-level mayoral elections.
Once he realises his new reality, in Yamalok, Lakhan, a shrewd political player, gives the king Yama a letter, which reads, “It has been ordered that Brahma, Bishnu and Maheshswor jointly want Lakhan to be made the king of Yamalok.” Lakhan now becomes the king of Yamalok, ensuing ample comedy of errors mixed with social satire.
Actor Ram Bhajan Kamat portrays the role of titular Lakhan while accompanying him on stage are actors Bikash Parajuli (as Yamaraj), Bharat Karki, Rajesh Thakur, Ashok Dutt and Sagar Bista, among others.
Lakhan Patbaari is currently on stage at Aarohan Gurukul and will run till July 30, every day at 5 pm.
