Home Minister Janardan Sharma has claimed that the new national identity card, which is going to be launched soon as a pilot project, will be gender inclusive.

Responding to queries raised by some lawmakers about the rumoured features of the new ID that is supposed to replace the citizenship card, Sharma said the details will include the names of mother and grandmother of the bearer. “Some media reports suggested that the new card does not have the mother’s name, which is untrue,” the minister told Parliament on Monday.

The National Identity Card Management Centre under the Home Ministry is set to issue 110,000 IDs in the piloting phase.

Lawmakers Shanta Manavi and Kunti Shahi had raised questions about possible missing of the mother’s name on the card. The centre claimed that it adopted a new template one month ago after discussion with the stakeholders. The Cabinet has already approved the prototype.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Sharma said the government’s attention had been drawn towards the conditions of the survivors of floods and landslides.

On the incidents of violence against women, he said, “The incidents of VAW are a blot on human civilization. Action will be taken against such inhumane crimes.”

The minister appealed to Parliament to come up with stringent laws for controlling rising incidents of heinous crimes against women.
