Kapil Raj Giri, a sub-overseer at the office, was caught from a Martadi-based hotel along with Rs 80,000 cash that he had received as bribe. Police said Giri had demanded the amount from 40 former Haliyas (indentured farmers) who had paid Rs 2,000 each.
Giri told police that he had asked for the money as his allowance cut from the rehabilitation aid meant for former Haliyas because the office did not pay him food allowance for the field works he had done as part of the Haliya Rehabilitation Programme.
Chief District Officer Debendra Lamichhane assured to investigate into the case and take necessary action against Giri. An employee at the Division Cooperative Office in Lahan, Siraha, was also arrested for bribery on Wednesday. A team from the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority had caught Subas Gadtaula from his office along with Rs 15,000 bribe money he had received from a service seeker on Wednesday.
