CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has stressed on advancing the debate of directly elected executive presidential system.

Saying that the prime ministerial system has been pushing the country towards instability, Chairman Dahal said that the directly elected presidential system is essential for the political stability and development of the country.

At a press conference organised by the Press Centre Rupandehi on Wednesday, former Prime Minister Dahal said, “Directly elected presidential system will touch upon Madesh, Hill and Mountain and will also strengthen the national unity.”

Dahal, who led a decade-long armed revolt, said the Maoists party was advocating for directly elected executive presidential system since it joined the peace process. He said that his party was compelled to accept the prime ministerial system in the second Constituent Assembly after Nepali Congress and CPN-UML back tracked from their words to support the issue of directly elected executive president.

Leader Dahal said that the prime ministerial system was not appropriate for Nepal to take the country towards economic development, political stability and socialism.

Meanwhile, he called on the leaders who split from the Maoists party—Mohan Baidya-led Maoist, Baburam Bhattarai’s Naya Shakti Nepal and Netra Bikram Chand-led Maoist party—for unification. He said that he has received a green signal from the leaders to join the mother party.
