Sunsari flood death toll climbs to 11, five missing

As the floods and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall wreak havoc across the southern plains, the death toll from floods has reached 11 in Sunsari district while five others have gone missing.
According to District Police Office, eight people died in Itahari, one in Bhokraha, and two in Inaruwa and one in Duhabi.
In Gauri village of Itaharai-4, Rupesh Rai,3, Rupsani Rai, 8, Ishwor Sunuwar, 40, Sitthi Sah, 10, Mala Sah, 30, Aasadevi Rai, Anita Dhimal, 35, and one unclaimed body has been recovered in Tarahara.
In Bhokraha of the district, Upendra Mandal, 22, drowned in flood. In a separate incident in Inaruwa-10, Krishna Khatwe, 10, also drowned. Police have recovered an unclaimed body in Duhabi area of Sunsari, while five people have been missing in the district.
District Disaster Management Committee Sunsari has decided to ask for Rs 10 million with central committee in order to provide immediate relief to the flood affected people. A meeting of the committee held on Monday has formed a five-member rescue team under the assistance cheif district officer Manuka Neupane.
The committee has also decided to form and deploy teams of security personnel comprising Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police for the rescue and relief of the flood-affected people. The committee has decided to carry out immediate rescue of the people living in risky area and move them to safer locations and make arrangement of safe shelter for them.
Meanwhile, the District Administration Office has prohibited the movement of people and vehicles in the area from West of Sunsari River to the region eroded by the Koshi River. The administration has urged the locals and transport operators to avoid travelling to the region that are at higher risk of flooding.
Most of the rural municipalities and municipalities in the southern part of Sunsari district have been inundated due to floods in the local rivers triggered by heavy monsoon rains. It has been estimated that around 12,000 households have been displaced by the floods.
According to SP at Sunsari District Police Office, Bidhyananda Majhi, the number of houses destroyed and families displaced could be higher than we had assumed previously as almost all the places have been inundated. “Around 300-500 families were moved to safer locations via boats in the village where I reached for rescue operation,” said Majhi.
Security personnel from Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have been continuously engaged in rescue operation. There have been shortages of food, shelter and medicines for those rescued. The rescued people have been sheltered at schools, temples and mosques. Municipalities
