A Gurung feature film, Mainrimo, was screened for the first time in Nepal amid a function held in Chitwan on Sunday and Monday. The film Mainrimo (which translates to ‘Miss You’ in English) is based on the rampant migration that several districts in the west have in the last decade.
The film was screened at the Ganesh Chalachitra Mandir on Sunday and at QFX Jalma Hall in Narayangarh on Monday. Both screening attracted sizeable footfall.
Speaking to the Post, the film’s director Bhoj Bahadur Gurung said, “The film is our attempt to examine the educational and socio-political condition of rural Nepali villages. With migration overseas for employment on the rise, the villages have seen a massive dip in the number of residents, which is alarming.”
The film touches upon, among other motifs, the untimely death of Nepali migrant workers. “Watching the stories of migrant workers who travel abroad to escape poverty and the terrible conditions they have to endure there was heartrending. My eyes were brimming with tears,” said Shanti Gurung, one of the audiences.
The producers of the film now plan to take the film to other western cities such as Pokhara and Beshisahar.
Shot in location around Lamjung and Kaski, Mainrimo features actors Gaman Ghale, Prem Gurung, Sapana Gurung, Sesuba Gurung, and Gajendra Gurung, among others.
