Nominees for Glocal Teen Heroes announced
The nominees for the Glocal Teen Hero 2017—the third iteration of a programme designed to recognise dedicated, passionate, and innovative teenagers—was announced recently.The nominees for the Glocal Teen Hero 2017—the third iteration of a programme designed to recognise dedicated, passionate, and innovative teenagers—was announced recently.
Glocal Teen Hero provides a platform for Nepali teenagers to showcase their talent, creativity and initiatives. The platform encourages teenagers to develop an entrepreneurial thinking. Each year, the participants of the programme demonstrate their skills and expertise in wide array of fields including social work, journalism, mobile app development, computer programming, robotics, entrepreneurship and community development among others.
The shortlisted candidates for this year are social activists—16-year-old Albina Parwin from Sunsari, 18-year-old Rajaram Basnet from Dolakha, 18-year-old Sachin Dangi from Dang, 17-year-old Tanmay Chaudhary from Dhangadhi, Ayush Pandey (17), a computer programmer from Rupandehi and Prithu Singh Thakuri, a 19 year old entrepreneur from Kathmandu. The candidates were selected on the basis of their resume, evidence of their contribution and a personal statement on their accomplishment.
Bipana Sharma, a 17-year old child rights activist, and Santosh Lamichhane, a young scientist, were felicitated with the First and Second Wai Wai Glocal Teen Hero awards in the years 2015 and 2016 respectively.
The nominated teens will go through a six-day capacity building workshop before the final award. The winner for this year’s programme will be selected by the panel of jury comprising of Renaud Meyer, UNDP Country Director to Nepal, Suraj Vaidya, President of Vaidya’s Organization of Industries, Upaul Majumdar, General Manager of Soaltee Crowne Plaza, Reecha Sharma, an actress and Ranjit Acharya, CEO of Prisma Advertising.
The programme will also select The Fantastic Teen 2017 through SMS voting.
The award ceremony of the programme will be held on September 1 at Soaltee Crowne Plaza.
