Susta folks take risky boat ride to avoid Indian security check
People living in Susta town of Nawalparasi district depend on bordering Indian market for their daily essentials. Recently these town folks have been commuting in makeshift boats to visit nearby Indian markets after Indian security forces started annoying them in the name of security check, Susta locals say.Narayan Sharma
People living in Susta town of Nawalparasi district depend on bordering Indian market for their daily essentials. Recently these town folks have been commuting in makeshift boats to visit nearby Indian markets after Indian security forces started annoying them in the name of security check, Susta locals say.
The dwellers of Susta Rural Municipality visit the nearby Indian markets taking precarious ride. The Susta folks visit bordering Indian markets such as Bahuar, Baithawliya, Karamahiya and Nichlaul that are approximately 30 km away from Nepali territory.
Everyday around 200-300 Susta people make this risky journey to the towns in Indian state of Bihar.
The semi-weekly market in the Indian towns on Sunday and Thursday offers purchases at cheap cost, luring thousands of people in nearby settlements to shop there.
Likewise, school going children of Susta also travel in the boats to go to a school in nearby Paklihawa village. The Janta Dalit Primary School of Susta offers education only up to grade five. The school established 40 years ago imparts education to some 400 Susta children.
School going children of Susta are either forced to make this risky journey or have to go to Indian school to attend higher classes.
