Shakya bags 7 gold as Gurung sets records

Shakya, who had claimed triple gold along with Gurung with both swimmers setting a national record each on the first day, won women’s 200m individual medley, 50m breaststroke, 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle gold medals on the final day. Gurung added two gold medals to his tally, winning the 200m freestyle and 50m freestyle final.
Gurung won the 50m freestyle in a new national record time of 25.97 seconds breaking the previous mark of 26.18 set by Alexander Shah during the sixth Fina Junior World Championships in Indianapolis earlier this year. Shah, playing for Lincoln, finished second in the event clocking 26.29 and Devesh Manandhar of Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club was third in 26.72.
Gurung’s next record came in the 50m backstroke heats after he timed 31.78 seconds but clocked 43.72 in the final to finish sixth. He had bettered his own mark of 31.98 set during the 12th South Asian Games last year in India. Shah won 50m backstroke gold in 32.28 ahead of Anubhav Subba (33.60) and Dilip Thapa Magar (35.88) of TAC. The first gold of the day for Gurung came in the 200m freestyle in which he timed 2:22.91 and beat Manandhar (2:24.50) and Dipesh Chaudhary (2:33.35) of TAC.
Shakya opened the day with 200m IM gold winning the event in 2:49.78 minutes and in the process she beat Duana Lama (2:54.43) of John Dewey School and Sameer Shova Thapa (3:38.57) of Nisarga Batika School. Her 50m breaststroke gold came in 40.31. Sonira Bista (40.40) of TAC and Lama (40.47) completed the podium finishes.
In the 50m backstroke, Shakya timed 38.50 to beat Anushiya Tandukar (41.98) of Rajarshi Gurukul and Ashara Shakya (42.19). Her 50m freestyle gold came in 30.25 with Thapa (31.72) finishing second and Lama (32.94) taking bronze. Lama finally beat Shakya for 200m breaststroke gold in 3:10.28. Shakya clocked 3:10.30 and Bista timed 3:23.44.
Shuvam Shrestha of APF also won double gold medal on the final day starting with 100m breaststroke in which he timed 1:11.37. He saw off Kiran Karki (1:15.45) and Bedagya Raj Joshi (1:22.04). Shrestha timed 2:38.47 to win the 200m breaststroke gold and once again Karki (2:41.96) and Joshi (3:02.37) finished second and third.
Anubhav Subba of TAC won the 100m butterfly final in 1:03.78 in an event where his clubmate Suresh Rai (1:16.10) finished second and Anan Lama (1:21.25) of Loyola College ended up in third.
