People will reject leftist alliance, says Mahat

“The two leftist parties are being united on the ground of communism. Prachanda [Maoist chairman] even maintained that there will be communism in Nepal within the next 10 years, which clearly is a threat to liberal democracy,” the former minister said during an interaction organised by the Reporters’ Club on Friday, adding that the Nepali people believe in the democratic system.
Calling the leftist alliance “unnatural”, Mahat said the people would reject the union eventually.
Earlier this week, the three parties announced their electoral alliance, unveiling a plan for unity after the federal and provincial elections.
Questioning the moral character of the Maoist Centre, Mahat accused its Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal of frequently changing camps just to remain in power. The NC and the Maoists are coalition partners which had alliance in various local councils in the recently held local level elections.
On the call of several NC leaders for Maoist ministers to resign on moral ground or for Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to sack them, Mahat said the government had no plans to reshuffle the Cabinet immediately.
Since the elections are near, Mahat said restructuring the Cabinet now would only create more instability. “There have been discussions in the party on reshuffling the Cabinet but the government has not taken any decision in this regard,” he added.
