In a meeting with top leaders of the two parties at CPN-UML Parliamentary Party Office in Singha Durbar on Tuesday, the legal eagles made such suggestions citing the election code of conduct and other constitutional and political restrictions, CPN (Maoist Centre) lawmaker Ram Narayan Bidari said.
Both the parties underwent discussions with law professionals at UML’s Parliamentary Party Office in Singha Durbar on Tuesday. Senior law experts and former attorney general were present at the discussion.
According Bidari, the leaders have agreed to move ahead by forging a common position regarding the National Assembly election. The leaders discussed the process and ways to form the National Assembly. The discussion focused on whether the National Assembly should be formed based on majority system or single transferable voting system.
It has been learnt that the leaders also discussed the ways to move forward by removing complications seen in the constitutional provision on the National Assembly elections. The participants opined the bill pertaining to National Assembly that is in the process of being tabled should be processed as it is.
Meanwhile, as the unification process between the CPN-UML and UCPN (Maoist Centre) has been gaining momentum, the Nepali Congress has been reiterating that the formation of National Assembly should be done through single transferable voting system.
The constitution has provisioned 59-member strong National Assembly, out of which 56 will be selected through election while the remaining three including a woman will be nominated by the president on the recommendation of the government.
At the meeting, CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli, Deputy-chair Bamdev Gautam, parliamentary party deputy leader Subas Nembang, lawmaker Agni Kharel were present at the meeting, while from the Maoist Center, Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha were present.
