As many as 50,000 manuscripts face risk of damage while moving the National Archives office from Singha Durbar to a new location, officials have warned.
On May 8, 2014, the Cabinet decided to provide the 13 ropanis of land occupied by the National Archives to the Supreme Court.
On August 14 of the same year the government said the National Archives would be shifted to Narayanhiti. But the exact location within the Narayanhiti premises is yet to be determined for the National Archives.
Saubhagya Pradhananga, chief of the National Archives, says hundreds of invaluable manuscripts might get damaged while moving the office.
The present building where the National Archives is houses was constructed with Indian government’s assistance. The block behind the main building where the microfilming section is located was constructed with support from the German government.
“Donor countries, recognising the importance of the manuscripts and other items of historical significance, lent support for their preservation,” Pradhananga said, adding, the National Archives should not be shifted from its secure location.
