On the occasion, Plan International is organising radio programmes that will see 300 young girls from across the country take on the role of radio presenters to discuss various issues related to girl child.
Young girls will take lead of the talk programmes at 300 community radios under “Because I am a Girl” initiative, a global movement of Plan International in coordination with Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (ACORAB).
“The radio takeover is a unique opportunity for girls to discuss their issue with policy makers, leaders and activists and to seek strong commitment from them: as agents of change girls will remind them to take positive actions and use their positions to influence changes in policy and practice and to promote equality and justice for girls,” said Sven Coppens, country director of Plan International.
“By holding 300 ‘takeovers’ in 75 districts, 300 girls will demand changes against the discrimination and prejudice that holds them back in private and public life,” Coppens added, noting that when girls get equal opportunities, they can transform their lives and ensure development and prosperity of their communities.
