Sitaula in dilemma over contesting polls under FPTP or PR
Nepali Congress (NC) leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula has reached out to the party cadres of his election constituency before taking the decision whether to contest the parliamentary election under the first-past-the-post or, proportional representation category.Nepali Congress (NC) leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula has reached out to the party cadres of his election constituency before taking the decision whether to contest the parliamentary election under the first-past-the-post or, proportional representation category.
Sitaula, who was dissatisfied after the party sent the candidate lists to the Election Commission by keeping his name in the proportional representation category, visited his constituency on Sunday.
Leader Situala said that he had arrived at his constituency to inquire the desire of cadres. He said that he would contest the election under the first-past-the-post or proportional representation category only on the cadres’ suggestions.
He has been holding discussions with the cadres of Jhapa-3 (Sitaula’s election constituency) since Sunday.
Situala said that he was left panic-stricken after the party sent the candidate lists by keeping his name under proportional category.
“The party had kept my name in the proportional category without holding discussion with me,” he told the cadres of Bahradashi Rural Municipality-7. “I need your important suggestions at the present,” he added.
“We cannot cast vote to other parties by carrying the flag of Nepali Congress,” local cadre Om Prakash Gautam said, adding, “Forge electoral alliance in other districts. We want you to be the first-past-the-post candidate of the constituency.”
Saying that there is still time to make correction, Gautam urged leader Sitaula to make correction in the candidates’ list and file the name under the first-past-the-post category.
“How can we cast vote to the candidate of other party by keeping aside Sitaula who had already served as party’s General Secretary and Home Minister in the past,” another cadres questioned.
On the occasion, leader Sitaula was of the opinion that the party should not have forged electoral alliance for the federal parliament.
He said that the electoral alliance was forged just to fulfill the vested interests of leaders and parties.
“The party should have forged electoral alliance like this time in the local level elections,” he said.
“Had the party forged electoral alliance in the local level elections, it would have added contribution in the development of local level units,” he added.
He, however, said that recently forged electoral alliance was centered purely on elections.
Moreover, Situala said that the electoral alliance would not honour people rather it would fulfill the vested interests of leaders and parties.
“It will have a long-term effect in the country’s politics,” he said.
