The bureau, that handles sensitive cases including terrorism, has since handed over the case to Metropolitan Police Range, Teku.
While the gun seized from the duo has an Indian licence, their connection with terrorism groups could not be established, said a senior official of the bureau, requesting anonymity.
Jasbir Singh and Arbind Singh of Punjab were arrested from Kamalpokhari area last Wednesday with a factory-made pistol, 51 rounds of bullets and four magazines. Police also impounded a vehicle with Indian number plate.
The range, that is currently investigating the matter, has filed a case against the duo in attempted murder and possession of illegal arms and ammunitions. “One of the arrestees claim that he works for electricity authority in India, while the other claims to be a farmer,” said SP Ram Dutta Joshi.
As the country prepares for federal and provincial elections, the arrest of the foreigners with a large amount of ammunition has raised suspicion of a possible terror plot in the Valley.
