The National Human Rights Commission is preparing to monitor the ongoing attacks on the candidates for the upcoming federal and provincial elections.

As part of its preparations, the NHRC on Tuesday held a discussion with the Federa-tion of Nepali Journalists. The FNJ brass pledged its support to the constitutional rights body in its monitoring, the commission said in a statement.

NHRC Chairman Anup Raj Sharma told the meeting that the commission would monitor human rights violations during the polls, adding that the watchdog has the right to raise questions about the activities of the Election Commission.

Expressing the commission’s willingness to institutionalise cooperation with the FNJ, Sharma said they would meet every two months to assess the NHRC’s progress. FNJ Chairman Govinda Acharya said the federation had been working in close coordination with the NHRC.

NHRC member Govinda Sharma Paudyal said the commission would finalise the modality of election monitoring after a meeting with EC officials soon.
