Nov 17, 2017-
The Women in Art exhibition, which displays artworks by seven finest women artists of Nepal, is slated to open today at Music Art Gallery in Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur. The exhibit features 19 works in total.
Most of the artistic works portray themes such as religion, modern art, nature as well as womanhood.
The exhibit features works by Seema Sah, Ashmina Ranjit, Bidhata KC, Erina Tamrakar, Sushma Shakya, Pramila Bajracharya, and Sajita Shahi.
Speaking to the Post, proprietor of the organising gallery, Sagar KC, said, “It is the gallery’s initiative to provide a platform for these phenomenal women who have contributed a lot to Nepali art industry.”
Bidhata KC, one of the featured artists, shared that the programme will be an encouragement to next generation of female artists. “In a patriarchal society, women are always bound to household duties and chores and finding the time to paint is an admirable feat, and the gallery wants to encourage women’s engagement with art,” she said.
Five of Bidhata’s artworks, based on her travel diaries to Mustang, are being displayed at the exhibition.
Similarly, paintings Celebration of Womanhood and The Third Eye (symbol of woman power), by Erina Tamrakar, which are based on the motifs of the women’s liberation will also grace the exhibit.
“I think everyone struggles equally in the Nepali art industry,” Tamrakar said, “But rather than competitions between male and female artists, this kind of programme will be a lot more supportive and practical.”
The exhibition will run until December 3.
