The exhibit was inaugurated by Brazillian Ambassador to Nepal Maria Teresa Mesquita Pessoa.
The title of the exhibit literally translates to ‘A Game of Women’s Chess’ and features 53 pieces, unlike the traditional 32 of chess.
The ceramics up on display at the exhibit were individually hand-moulded out of a combination of local Nepali clay from Thimi, Tarai, and Kaolin.
Speaking to the Post, artist Shrestha said that he had conceptualised the idea about a decade back, but the actual process involved two weeks each for the individual sculptures. The sculptures are inspired from contemporary art, Chinese symbols and traditional folk art forms of Nepal.
The current exhibit follows Shrestha’s 2015’s Masculism series, which centred on bull imagery.
Speaking to the Post about the current exhibition, artist Shrestha said, “I think it’s about time that we double up the efforts on creating gender equality, and this exhibit is an attempt to tip the scales.”
The exhibit Nari Satranj will conclude on Jan 15, 2018.
